Well.. just one person working on it + this being open source things could take a while, still if anybody is building their own cairo it may be interesting to try and get hold of the patches and see if it makes a difference to our rendering speed...

Very nice - yes may take a while but seems inevitable since it will
enhance so much - even Firefox is Cairo'ified and will benefit :-)

wow, his real-time text-animation toy using Cairo-GPU is huge stuff!

i had become a bit wary after reading a Qt vs. Cairo comparison at
http://zrusin.blogspot.com/2006/10/benchmarks.html (in these, Qt could
be 10x faster), but wonderful to see that Cairo still has some tricks
available :)

those benchmarks are obviously not good reference (3 years old, Cairo
1.4 wasn't even out yet).

I've always thought cairo had great potential so, was disapointed to find it seeming slow (for the record, I'm not convinced it's the entire or even most of the slowness problem in our case). So it's good to see work going into making it go fast.

Cairo enables so many integration opportunities it would be bad if it's held up by being slow.

true; reading back, i get the feeling my postings have been a bit
negative towards Cairo (suggesting Qt, among others), but that's not the
case.

Cairo was definitely the best option for a project like Shoebot to get
started. And it still is; running shoebot scripts through the
command-line is fast as hell! Our main bottleneck is clearly on our side
(too many transform recalculations, too many GTK refreshes, etc.)

and anyway, i think there's only stuff to be gained if other backends
are implemented -- if not only for our own benchmarking, catering to
specific needs is a point to consider (e.g. OpenGL is great for
animation, but not at all for images intended for print).

so i, for one, keep welcoming our old Cairo overlords :>
